Adispute over ownership of a dog led to shots being fired outside the Newark Walmart on Jan. 8, police reports said.

Police were called to the Walmart at 1315 N. 21st St. about 5:10 p.m. on reports of a possible shooter at the store.

Officers were able to determine that there was no active shooter and that no one had been wounded.

Surveillance video from the store and witness statements indicated that a man, later identified as 37-yearold Kyle A. Daugherty of Newark, was leaving the store when a woman with whom he’d had a relationship ran toward him, then stopped several feet away.

The video showed the two arguing before Daugherty pulled a firearm out of his waistband and fired at the woman.

A shell casing was found in the area. Police found Daugherty at a nearby restaurant and took him into custody.

Daugherty, who is on federal probation for a drugrelated offense, told police he had fired the shot but the woman was armed with a knife, though no knife was apparent in the video, court records said.

Daugherty is in the Licking County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond after being charged with felonious assault.
