OSU’S Sheffield appears headed to NFL draft

Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield apparently will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

Sheffield has kept a low public profile in his two seasons with the Buckeyes, declining most interview requests. So it wasn’t a surprise that he didn’t announce a decision about his future Monday, the final day for eligible underclassmen to declare for the draft.

But an Instagram post by EXOS sports training listed him among the players training for the NFL combine.

Sheffield, who spent one year at Alabama before transferring to Blinn (Texas) junior college, was in the Buckeyes' rotation at cornerback the last two years. In 2018, he had two interceptions and was credited with eight passes broken up, which tied for the team lead.

At the Rose Bowl media day on Dec. 30, he summed up his season.

“I’d say it was a pretty good year,” Sheffield said. “I’ve been working on a lot of things lately and am trying to get better and better as a cornerback.”

Sheffield has all the tools to be a standout, starting with speed.

He ran track for Ohio State in the offseason and broke the school 60-meter record with a time of 6.663 seconds. Last summer, Nfl.com named Sheffield the fastest player in college football.

Sheffield rotated at cornerback with junior Damon Arnette and sophomore Jeffrey Okudah. Arnette announced last week he would return to OSU.

In other news, The Dispatch learned that offensive line coach Greg Studrawa will return to Ohio State for the 2019 season. Studrawa said at the Rose Bowl that he expected to be back, but that hadn’t been finalized.
