Africentri­c girls slip past Newark

Alexia Smith converted a rebound basket near the freethrow line with 6.5 seconds remaining to give Africentri­c a 47-45 victory over host Newark in a nonleague girls game featuring state powers Monday.

Newark (18-2) had tied thescore on a three-pointer by Katie Shumate with 18 seconds remaining. The Wildcats turned the ball over on their final possession. Shumate led Newark with 15 points.

Jordan Horston totaled 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals to pace Africentri­c.

Ranked No. 1 in Division III, Africentri­c (19-0) has defeated three state-ranked Division I teams.

In another game pitting Division I state powers and prized Ohio State signees, Canton Mckinley defeated Dublin Coffman 68-65. Twotime Ms. Basketball winner Kierstan Bell scored 22 points for Mckinley (19-1). Jacy Sheldon had a game-high 25 points for Coffman (18-2).

In boys basketball, host Africentri­c upset Walnut Ridge 65-62 in a City League South game, vaulting South (15-1, 10-1) into the driver’s seat to reach the City title game.

Eli Burke had 19 points each for Africentri­c (10-8, 8-4). Meech Coble had 17 for Walnut Ridge (14-3, 10-2).

Ex-quest star Still to be inducted into hall

Former Quest star Valerie Still will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame on June 8 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Other inductees in the class of 2019 are Beth Bass (contributo­r), Joan Cronan (contributo­r), Nora Lynn Finch (contributo­r), Ticha Penicheiro (internatio­nal Player), Ruth Riley (player) and Carolyn Bush Roddy (veteran player).
