The concert will conclude with Sibelius’ “Lemminkainen Suite (Four Legends From the Kalevala).” Sibelius was once immensely popular, Milanov said, but his work is not as frequently performed as it deserves to be.
“It’s so rare to hear anything but maybe a couple of his early symphonies and maybe a violin concerto,” said Milanov, who added that “Lemminkainen Suite” reflects the composer’s heritage.
“He was an incredibly productive composer who created so many wonderful things with a great sense of beauty, structure and a national accent,” Milanov said.
During the playing of “Lemminkainen Suite,” a video presentation by Jason Gay that reflects the mood of the work will be shown.
“I always try to have a concert (where) I could include something of that nature that will make the music a little bit more visual,” Milanov said.
In the end, the concert might extend the spirit of winter just a bit longer — though Milanov promises the works to be “cold on the outside” only, with passion and warmth just beneath the surface.
