Ohio State baseball loses fourth straight

Michael Trautwein drove in two runs and Ryan Bader pitched five innings of one-run relief to lead Northweste­rn to a 7-2 victory over Ohio State on Saturday in a Big Ten baseball game at Bill Davis Stadium.

Kobie Foppe had two hits for the Buckeyes (16-15, 2-3), who suffered their fourth consecutiv­e loss. OSU starter Seth Lonsway (4-3)allowed three runs, all earned, in seven innings.

The Wildcats (13-14, 3-2), leading 3-1,broke it open with three runs inthe eighth off reliever Thomas Waning. Alex Erro singled, went to third on Shawn Goosenberg’s base hit and scored on Willie Bourbon’s groundout to first base. Goosenberg went to third on Jack Dunn’s single and scored on Ben Dickey’s single. Trautwein’s double drove in Dunn for a 6-1 lead.

Joe Gahm relieved Waning and struck out Leo Kaplan to end the inning.

The Buckeyes loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth against relieveran­thony Alepra on singles by Conner Pohl and Dillon Dingler and a walk to Zach Dezenzo. Andrew Fishel’s groundout to first delivered Pohl to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 6-2, but Alepra struck out Ridge Winand and Nick Erwin to end the threat.

The Buckeyes loaded the bases in the ninth, but Nick Paciorek struck out Pohl, Dingler and Dezenzo to end the game.

Softball

Ohio State hit three home runs, but Rutgers (17-18, 1-7 Big Ten) defeated the Buckeyes 8-6 in eight innings at Buckeye Field.

Kallie Boren and Niki Carver each homered to help OSU (22-11, 6-2) build a 3-1 lead in the second inning and Meg Otte’s solo shot tied it at 5-5 in the sixth before Rutgers scored three runs in the eighth. The Buckeyes a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the rally fell short.

Men’s volleyball

Jake Hanes had 19 kills and Reese Devilbiss had 14 to lead host Ohio State (10-18, 5-9) to a 3-2 comeback victory over Ball State (15-14, 6-8) in a Midwestern Intercolle­giate Volleyball Associatio­n match. The Buckeyes wrapped up the regular season by winning 19-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-23, 15-9.
