Reds place Mahle on IL, call up Romano

- By John Fay Cincinnati Enquirer

MILWAUKEE— The Cincinnati Reds' luck with starting pitchers has run out.

Right-hander Tyler Mahle went on the injured list with a strained left hamstring on Monday. Righthander Lucas Sims will start in Mahle's place on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Right-hander Sal Romano was called up from triple-a Louisville to take Mahle's roster spot.

The Reds' five starters — Mahle, Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, Tanner Roark and Anthony Desclafani — have made every scheduled start. Sims did start on May 28 because the Reds had a makeup doubleheader the day before.

Sims, the 25-yearold right-hander, was obtained from the Atlanta Bravesfor Adam Duvall on July 30, 2018. He's pitched twice on his second stint with the Reds, totalling 21⁄3 innings, no runs, one hit, three strikeouts.

Romano’s back

Romano had a rough go early at triple-a. He's 4-7 with 4.70 ERA overall.

But he's 1-0 with 0.69 ERA since being moved back to the starting rotation.

"I was following (Alex Wood) a couple of times, so I was able to come in on a fresh inning, work a couple of innings," Romano said. "I had that starter mentality. That helped me the most. If I'm able to stay with my mechanics and execute my pitches, I'm going to be just fine. The stuff came. I worked on my pitches. I worked on something mechanically. Something clicked a month ago.” AMERICAN LEAGUE
