Dewine’s proposal

The 16 actions outlined Tuesday by Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine as part of his proposal to address gun violence:

• Pass a law to allow a judge to order the temporary removal of guns from people found to be a danger to themselves or others.

• Pass a law to require background checks for all gun sales with an exception for gifts between family members.

• Free up space in state psychiatri­c hospitals for treatment of the seriously mentally ill by relocating nonviolent patients to local facilities.

• Use part of $675 million in social services funding to povertystr­icken schools over the next two years to treat children with emotional and mental health problems.

• Spend $15 million in Medicaid funds to provide remote “telehealth” mental health counseling services to students in outlying areas.

• Work with schools to provide parents and others with screening tools and informatio­n to help identify students at risk of mental illness.

• Increase prison sentences for violent felons caught in possession of guns from a maximum of three years to eight years.

• Increase prison sentences for possessing a gun during a felony from a maximum of one year to three years.

• Increase prison sentences for displaying or using a gun during a felony from a maximum of three years to five years.

• Increase prison sentences for “straw men” who buy guns illegally for others from a maximum of three years to eight years.

• Increase prison sentences for people who possess guns they knew were illegally purchased to a maximum of eight years.

• Increase prison sentences for those who illegally provide guns to minors from a maximum of one year to three years.

• Expand use of Ohio’s school safety tip line (844-723-3764) allowing reports on threats to school safety to be reported anonymousl­y.

• Upgrade state law enforcemen­t’s monitoring of social media posts to identify potential threats to public and school safety.

• Distribute $9 million in budget funds to provide security grants to houses of worship and nonprofits.

• Emphasize training of school staff to identify and report potential threats of violence.
