All-star shortstop Fernandez dies at 57

Tony Fernandez, a stylish shortstop who made five All-star teams during his 17 seasons in the major leagues and helped the Toronto Blue Jays win the 1993 World Series, died Sunday after complicati­ons from kidney disease. He was 57.

Fernandez was taken off life support in the afternoon with his family present at a hospital in Weston, Florida, said Imrad Hallim, the director and co-founder of the Tony Fernandez Foundation.

Fernandez had been in a medically induced coma and had waited years for new kidneys.

Fernandez won four straight Gold Gloves with the Blue Jays in the 1980s and holds club records for career hits and games played.

He had four separate stints with Toronto and played for six other teams, including the Cincinnati Reds in 1994 and the Cleveland Indians in 1997.

Four-run 10th leads Ohio State to victory

Conner Pohl hit a threerun double in the top of the 10th inning and Ohio State (2-1) defeated Indiana State 10-6 in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Scottie Seymour capped the Buckeyes’ four-run 10th with an RBI single.

Patrick Murphy (1-0) pitched an inning for the victory.

Indiana State (0-3) scored two runs in the ninth to force extra innings.

Notre Dame scores five in first, beats Buckeyes

Notre Dame (7-2) scored five runs in the first inning and went on to beat Ohio State 6-4 in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Avery Clark hit two home runs and had three RBI for the Buckeyes (3-5). She has four homers for the season. second-ranked Nittany Lions defeated Ohio State 20-16 on Saturday night in a Big Ten showdown in State College, Pennsylvan­ia.

Malik Heinselman, Sammy Sasso and Quinn Kinner won decisions to give Ohio State a 9-6 lead at the break, but Mark Hall pinned Kaleb Romero and Vincenzo Joseph and Aaron Brooks each earned major decisions to propel Penn State to a 20-9 lead.

Kollin Moore and Gary Traub picked up the final seven points for the sixthranke­d Buckeyes, who will now prepare for the Big Ten tournament, which begins

Scott Parel overcame a three-shot deficit and closed with an 8-under 63 to win the Chubb Classic in Naples, Florida, by two strokes over Bob Estes, his third career victory on the PGA Tour Champions to surpass $5 million for his career.

Parel moved atop the Charles Schwab Cup standings for the first time in his career.

Bob Estes shot a 64 and finished second, while Kevin Sutherland (67) and Bernhard Langer (69) tied for third.
