Reyes’ two-run homer caps Tribe’s comeback against Reds

-

Shane Bieber (3-0) overcame two solo home runs to pitch into the eighth inning, Franmil Reyes hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer and Cleveland snapped a four-game skid with a 4-2 victory over the Reds in Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

Reyes capped the Indians’ comeback from a 2-0 deficit with his first homer of the season after hitting 37 with San Diego and Cleveland last year. His shot in the eighth inning to deep right-center field against Nate Jones (0-1).

The Indians played their third consecutive game without manager Terry Francona, who continues to undergo tests in Cleveland for a gastrointestinal condition. There is no timetable for his return. Sandy Alomar, normally the team’s first base and catching coach, is filling in for Francona.

NCAA hands call on fall sports championships to each division

The NCAA Board of Directors is allowing each division of the association to decide independently by Aug. 21 whether it will be able to conduct championship events safely in fall sports such as soccer, volleyball and lower levels of football during the coronavirus pandemic.

The board had been considering what to do about fall championship events sponsored by the NCAA, but instead of making a broad decision across three divisions, it set parameters for each to make its own call.

Uconn is first FBS program to cancel football over virus

Uconn canceled its 2020-2021 football season Wednesday, becoming the first FBS program to suspend football because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as other schools had taken the Huskies off their schedules and the governor was reluctant to allow Uconn to travel to states with high infection rates.

“After receiving guidance from state and public health officials and consulting with football student-athletes, we’ve decided that we will not compete on the gridiron this season,” athletic director David Benedict said. “The safety challenges created by COVID-19 place our football student-athletes at an unacceptable level of risk.”

Uconn had been scheduled to play its first season as an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference.

The Huskies had already been taken off the schedules of Illinois, Indiana, Maine and Mississippi by those schools, and games against North Carolina and Virginia remained uncertain, Uconn officials said. Many of the Power Five conferences are playing leagueonly games this season.

Browns’ Tretter wants daily COVID testing in NFL camps

Cleveland Browns center and NFLPA President JC Tretter will push for daily COVID-19 testing during training camp as the NFL moves slowly toward the start of the season.

Tretter, who weighed the risks and elected to play in 2020 as his wife, Anna, expects the couple’s first child, said Wednesday that players being tested every day would eliminate some of the lag time in getting results that has led to problems during Major League’s Baseball’s start to the season.

As part of their agreement to open camps, the league and players decided testing would be done on a daily basis for the first two weeks of camp and revert to every other day so long as teams kept their positive rates low.

Tretter feels baseball’s struggles show there’s a need for more testing.
