Two additional Columbus homicide victims identified
The number of homicides in Columbus this year continues to move toward a single-year record as detectives have identified two more victims.
Giante Debvon Adaway, 22, who was shot multiple times Wednesday on the Northeast Side, died of his injuries at 11:25 a.m. Saturday at a local hospital, Columbus police reported late Saturday night
Police and medics were called at about 7 p.m. Wednesday to the 5000 block of Enclave Boulevard in The Enclave at Albany Park apartment homes, off the south side of East Dublin Granville Road and just west of Old Hamilton Road.
Responding officers found Adaway, who resided on Lee Avenue in north central Columbus, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported in critical condition, but police initially reported at the time that he was expected to survive his injuries.
No further details about any suspect or suspects, or why the shooting may have occurred, were released by homicide detectives.
Adaway’s death is the 139th homicide in Columbus this year. That’s four short of the record 143 homicides the city endured in 2017, with two months left in this year.
Homicide detectives also reported late Saturday night the identity of a man whose body was found Thursday in Franklinton.
The body of Frank Walters, 37, was found Thursday afternoon in a wooded area north of North Skidmore and Scott streets, near the area of a homeless encampment.
Police were alerted to the body by a man who walked into police headquarters Downtown at 1:04 p.m. Thursday and advised officers that he knew the location of a deceased person. The man led officers to the location of the body, which was in a shallow grave.
Homicide detectives said they were investigating the death as “suspicious.” And late Saturday night, detectives reported that the Franklin County coroner’s office had ruled the death a homicide.
Walters’ death was the city’s 136th homicide.
Detectives have identified a suspect, and a warrant for his arrest has been filed, but they did not release his name publicly so as “to assist in furthering this investigation.”
