Weird postal journeys not uncommon Let’s hear about the Capitol’s defenders Balderson showed character in crisis

-

I got a kick out of the Friday letter “Should we bring back Pony Express?”, regarding the 15-day, 400-mile journey of a card from Pennsylvania to Columbus. I can beat that. My friend mailed a card on Dec. 16 from Clintonville to my residence 6 miles away. I received it on Jan. 6th with a Dec. 18 postmark from Grand Rapids, MI. Somehow I think Newman (from a Seinfeld episode) was involved.

The siege on the Capitol was terrible. But where are the stories and coverage on how the Capitol was retaken? Who are those front line heroes that preserved our democracy? How did they do it? Why focus on just the victims and not the victors?

Kudos to Rep. Troy Balderson for his proactive and reactive response to the Electoral College certification on Jan. 6. He appropriately sent his constituents (of which I am one) a position statement on Congress overturning statewide elections. Impressive enough. When I watched with grief and horror the mob scene and the wanton destruction of our Capitol and attack on our democratic election process, I immediately reached out to Balderson and Sen. Rob Portman.

Within a short time Balderson communicated with his constituents with a statement about the protests. This is admirable, accountable and consoling behavior. Not a word from Portman before or during this critical day in our nation’s history. I have come to understand that doing good is simply not enough for myself or for my elected officials. It is as important or maybe even more important to stand up against people with destructive intention.
