Man gets 18 years in Southeast Side slaying
An East Side man will spend at least 18 years in prison after admitting Monday that he was responsible for a fatal 2019 shooting outside a Southeast side convenience store.
Xavier N. Jackson, 20, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a gun specification and felonious assault in the death of 20-year-old Ahpercy Lee Raylon Wade Donaldson.
The sentence was recommended by prosecuting and defense attorneys as part of a plea agreement and was immediately imposed by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Holbrook.
Jackson was credited for the 504 days he has spent in jail since his arrest. Under the Reagan Tokes Act, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction could hold Jackson for up to five and a half years after the completion of his sentence, based on his record in the institution.
Assistant Prosecutor Donald Miller told the judge that Jackson had accompanied his girlfriend to a De Store convenience store at 5591 Chatterton Road on Oct. 19, 2019, and waited in the car while she went inside.
Minutes later, shortly before 2 p.m., Donaldson stepped from another parked car and walked to the rear of the vehicle, between the store and where Jackson was parked, Miller said.
Surveillance video obtained from nearby businesses shows Jackson stepping from his car and firing multiple rounds from a handgun at Donaldson and another man before driving away.
One shot struck Donaldson in the back. Police who responded to the shooting found him in the parking lot. He was transported in critical condition to Mount Carmel East hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m.
Jackson's girlfriend, who had been left behind at the store and didn't witness the shooting, identified Jackson for police as the man who brought her there and fled in the car, Miller said.
Jackson was on the run until Nov. 22, 2019, when police arrested him at a residence on Woodbrook Circle North on the West Side.
The motive for the shooting wasn't determined, but Miller said it is believed to be gang-related. jfutty@dispatch.com
