Man killed in shooting at gas station

- Bethany Bruner

A man was fatally shot early Tuesday morning outside a gas station on the city's East Side that was the site of a previous fatal shooting in February.

Columbus police homicide detectives said in a release that the shooting was reported around 1 a.m. at the Eagle Fuels gas station and convenience store, located at 3851 E. Livingston Ave.

Responding officers found a man inside a car that had apparently tried to flee the shooting scene but crashed less than a half-mile west of the gas station at the intersection of East Livingston Avenue and Courtright Road.

The man had been shot and was taken in critical condition to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 a.m. His identity had not yet been released pending confirmation of identity by the Franklin County Coroner's office and notification of family.

No information has been released about possible suspects in the man's death, the city's 57th homicide committed in 2021. In 2020, the deadliest year on record in the city, the 57th homicide was not reached until June 24.

Police said a second vehicle crashed near the intersection of East Livingston Avenue and Beechwood Road, even closer to the gas station, after it was struck by a bullet around the same time. A 24-year-old woman inside the vehicle was taken to an area hospital in stable condition for treatment of injuries sustained as a result of the crash. A male occupant in that vehicle was not injured.

The fatal shooting Tuesday is the second at or near that Eagle Fuels gas station in less than two months.

Around 3:25 a.m. Feb. 24, two men were shot in the Eagle Fuels station parking lot, which is located across East Livingston from a post office branch. Marsean Kato, 20, of the East Side, later died from injuries he suffered after being shot multiple times. The second man was hospitalized but survived.

At least three other shootings have occurred since February at the East Livingston-courtright intersection where the mortally wounded man crashed, though none were fatal, police records show.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Columbus police at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
