Man fatally shot near OSU campus

One person is dead after a shooting early Tuesday morning in a parking lot area behind an apartment house near the Ohio State University campus and Greek fraterniti­es.

Columbus police were called at 3:38 a.m. on a report of a shooting in the rear of an apartment house in the 200 block of East 15th Avenue near North 4th Street. The area is about four blocks from Ohio State's campus and just east of some Greek fraterniti­es on that avenue.

The victim, identified as 33-year-old Dell Fields Jr., of Hamilton County in southwest Ohio, was taken in critical condition to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead at 5:36 a.m.

Fields' death is the 61st homicide committed in Columbus in 2021.

Ohio State issued a campus safety notice about the shooting on Tuesday morning. Fields was not affiliated with the university, campus police said.

No additional informatio­n about that shooting was immediatel­y available.

Homicide detectives have released the names of two people shot, one fatally, on April 13 at Eagle Fuels convenienc­e store on the 3800 block of East Livingston Avenue.

Abdou Kane, 21, was transporte­d to Ohiohealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 a.m., police said. He was the 57th homicide committed in Columbus this year.

Ozian Gemal, a 24-year-old female, and Asenake Kinde, a 30-year-old male, were occupants of a second vehicle that crashed at East Livingston Avenue and Beechwood Road after the car they were in was struck by a bullet. Gemal was transporte­d in stable condition to an area hospital with injuries she received in the crash. Kinde was not injured, police said.

Meanwhile, two other homicide victims who died after being shot in vehicles Sunday morning have still not been identified by homicide detectives.

Columbus police homicide detectives say patrol officers responding at 1:48 a.m. to a report of a shooting found a male inside a vehicle in an alley on the south side of 25th Avenue near Medina Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound.

Columbus Fire medics transporte­d the male to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center, where he died at 2:19 a.m. His death is the 59th homicide of 2021.

More than six hours later, police were called about a shooting around 8:10 a.m. near the intersecti­on of Sullivant Avenue and South Richardson Avenue on the Hilltop.

Police said a 59-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle in the 400 block of South Richardson between Sullivant Avenue and the entrance to an alley that runs behind Sullivant Avenue.

Columbus Fire medics transporte­d the victim to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center, where he died at 8:47 a.m. He was the victim of the 60th homicide committed in the city this year.
