Turnovers, lack of offense cost Jackets

- Bailey Johnson

Two goals 14 seconds apart. Two more goals, this time 56 seconds apart.

The Florida Panthers scored in quick succession twice on Tuesday, and it culminated in a 5-1 loss for the Blue Jackets and the extension of the longest winless streak of their season.

“I thought we did some good things in the first,” forward Cam Atkinson said. “Floodgates opened in the second and third.”

Jack Roslovic paused for more than five seconds before sharing his thoughts on how demoralizing those quick goals were.

“I mean, just, I messed up on one,” Roslovic said. “I don't know. It sucks, yeah. It sucks.”

The first two quick scores from the Panthers made the game 2-0 in the first period before Roslovic notched his 10th goal of the season, and the second two broke the game open from 3-1 to 5-1. At that point, there was no coming back for Columbus.

“We're there when it's 2-1, even 3-1,” Jackets coach John Tortorella said. “We have some offensive zone time . ... We've gotta keep our patience with it. We can't turn one over right at the blueline. We can't. It's something that we are always talking about as far as playing within ourselves. Turnovers are killing us.”

Here are some more takeaways from

the loss:

Duclair’s big series

Panthers forward Anthony Duclair, who spent parts of the 2017-18 and 201819 seasons with the Jackets, had three assists on Tuesday. He also picked up

two assists in Monday's game, giving him a hand in five of the nine goals Florida scored against Columbus across both games.

Duclair is far from the only former Blue Jacket making a home in the Miami metro area now — Florida general manager Bill Zito spent seven seasons in Columbus

— but he's the latest of them to put on a show against his former club.

Earlier this month, Alexander Wennberg, whose contract the Jackets bought out this past offseason, scored his first career hat trick in a 5-2 win for the Panthers against his old team.

Sherwood drops the gloves

A day after defenseman Gavin Bayreuther had his first NHL fight, forward Kole Sherwood added his name to the annals of hockeyfights.com with his first fight at the NHL level — or at least in a regular-season NHL game. Per Hockeyfights.com, Sherwood fought at the rookie showcase in 2017 and has two fights in the AHL on his record as well.

Sherwood dropped the gloves with Panthers forward Ryan Lomberg off the faceoff after Florida's third goal of the game, and it didn't take long for Lomberg, an experienced fighter, to gain the upper hand. bjohnson@dispatch.com @baileyajohnson_
