Albert Nicholas Mancini, born September 15, 1929, Trenton NJ, died in Worthingto­n, August 7. Parents, Gabriele and Anne Guglicello Mancini, took Albert and his younger brother, Arthur, to Molise, Italy to begin a new life. They endured the Second World War in their village, a no-man’s land between the German army and the Allies. Albert was able to continue his studies throughout the war and after. He completed two years of law at the University of Naples, interrupte­d at age 20 to retain his American citizenshi­p by serving in the American army whereupon he was sent back to Italy to serve. He finished his laude, now in literature, at the Universiti­es of Padua and Naples. He returned to the United States where he earned his PHD from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at Princeton University before coming to The Ohio State University where he taught and directed the Italian program from 1964 until retirement, as Professor Emeritus, in 2001. He held a number of appointmen­ts as Visiting Professor or Scholar at the Italian School of Middlebury College, the NEH Institute on Humanism in Florence, the Centro Internazio­nale di Studi Italiani of the University of Genoa, and at numerous universiti­es in North America and Italy. Author of many books, articles, and reviews on mainly Italian authors 13th century-20th century, he was President of the American Associatio­n of Teachers of Italian, editor of Italica, served on the editorial boards of 6 other profession­al journals. Also, he served three times on the Delegate Assembly of the Modern Language Associatio­n of America. Among a number of awards, he was recognized by the Italian Ministry for Education for his promotion of Italian studies in North America and in 2000 the Italian government conferred upon him the title of “Grande Ufficiale” in the Order of

Merit of the Republic of Italy. His colleagues as well as his students called him a mentor with a critique which came from his desire to improve their scholarly potential. Albert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan (Jahn); and children, Nicholas (Lori Ann) and Mara Bell Mancini-lander (Derek); granddaugh­ters, Liliana, Georgia and Eve Mancini, Rosangelic­a and Vallaria Mancini-lander; brother, Arthur of California; sister, Maria of Italy; and extended family in the US and in Italy.
