Recent Saturday drive was filled with positive sights along Sullivant Avenue
There have been many sad, tragic stories about life on Sullivant Avenue.
The Dispatch’s Youtube video “Suffering on Sullivant” is a perfect crosssection of those struggling to survive — no dreams, no plans, sheer combat survival.
A recent Saturday morning drive “down the slide” showed a sweeter, more loving, empathetic, inclusive and almost Utopian-like scene. The volunteers known as Sullivant Litter Warriors had picked up trash alongside the road the day before and it looked so nice.
Residents sat in the shade at Wedgewood giving away produce grown in the community gardens. Outreach organizations were providing meals, groceries and social work help. I saw at least three outdoor events giving away clothing and other donated vitals.
There were two separate outdoor events providing free food — I distinctly smelled good BBQ. The vibe was “take what you need,” and there is a lot of need. Many probably slept well that night with full bellies.
The Hilltop Homes Restoration Project has made incredible changes and raised the entire neighborhood’s home values — they look incredible.
It seemed like a big street fair that Saturday morning, rather than a boulevard of misery.
