Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash on I-70

A person driving west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate-70 was killed Sunday morning in a head-on crash with another vehicle in Madison County.

Troopers with the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the two-car crash around 6 a.m. Sunday and closed all eastbound lanes of the interstate in the area near Route 29/Urbana-west Jefferson Road in Jefferson Township.

The highway remained closed until 9:45 a.m. as troopers investigat­ed and cleared the wreckage, according to the state patrol.

Investigat­ors determined that an unidentified person in a red 2007 Chrysler 300 was driving west on I-70 in the eastbound lane and crashed into a Ram truck driven by a Plain City man. Both vehicles caught fire in the far-left lane.

Jefferson Township medics transporte­d the Plain City man to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center with nonlife threatenin­g injuries, troopers said.

The driver of the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers have not identified the person who died because family has not yet been notified.

It was not immediatel­y clear why the person was driving in the wrong direction of traffic.
