Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash on I-70
A person driving west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate-70 was killed Sunday morning in a head-on crash with another vehicle in Madison County.
Troopers with the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the two-car crash around 6 a.m. Sunday and closed all eastbound lanes of the interstate in the area near Route 29/Urbana-west Jefferson Road in Jefferson Township.
The highway remained closed until 9:45 a.m. as troopers investigated and cleared the wreckage, according to the state patrol.
Investigators determined that an unidentified person in a red 2007 Chrysler 300 was driving west on I-70 in the eastbound lane and crashed into a Ram truck driven by a Plain City man. Both vehicles caught fire in the far-left lane.
Jefferson Township medics transported the Plain City man to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries, troopers said.
The driver of the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers have not identified the person who died because family has not yet been notified.
It was not immediately clear why the person was driving in the wrong direction of traffic.
