Ohio State makes Peterson first ’25 scholarship offer

- Adam Jardy

Darryn Peterson essentially had a basketball in his hand as soon as he could walk.

Now, as he begins his freshman year of high school basketball, the hard workis paying off.

Late last week, Ohio State made Peterson the first member of the 2025 recruiting class to receive a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes.

“We've been talking to Kentucky and some other places, but this means more to him than anything because he's an Ohio kid,” his father, Darryl, said. “He almost felt at one point like the big places are reaching out, when's Ohio State coming in? All of a sudden, Ohio State came. He's an Ohio kid, and he always had dreams about playing at Akron U. because I played there but I tell him, ‘Hey, forget about Akron. I was small-time compared to you.'

“He's really grateful about the Ohio State offer. It means more to him than any of them.”

A Cincinnati native, Darryl Peterson scored 1,377 points for the Zips from 2001-06. Injuries cut short his career, but now his son is picking up where he left off.

This spring and summer, the 14year-old Darryn played AAU basketball for Wildcat Select's 15U team before being bumped up to the 16U team.

His father said he spent some time with the 17U team as well, and it was during those spring and summer months that the likes of LSU, West Virginia, Maryland, Xavier and others offered scholarships before Darryn had even begun high school.

The plan is to play his freshman year at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, a private school in Northeast Ohio that plays in Division II.

From there, his dad said, the plans are fluid.
