Recency, Heisman Trophy lead voting
In a close race between recency and the Heisman Trophy, Justin Fields was picked by Dispatch.com users as the best Ohio State quarterback of all time.
Fields, who played for the Buckeyes the past two seasons and is now with the Chicago Bears, received 23.49% of the vote.
Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, was second with 19.99%.
Fields began his college career at Georgia but transferred after his freshman season. At Ohio State, he led the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff semifinal in his first season and to the championship game last year. He finished third in the Heisman voting in 2019.
Earlier this year, he was selected by the Bears in the first round of the NFL draft.
Smith started for the Buckeyes from 2004-06. In winning the Heisman Trophy, he received 91.6% of the firstplace votes, a record that stood for 13 years. He played in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers from 2007-10.
