Recalling Quaker vigils at Statehouse

-

I was interested to see your historical protest photos on page 17A of the Sept. 5 Dispatch.

Regarding the photo in the lower left, featuring a women’s group protesting midi-length fashions in the foreground and a group of Quakers in the background: If the Quakers “took advantage of the situation” that would be news to me.

My father, Stanley Robinson Jr., was one of those Quakers who stood on the Statehouse steps every Wednesday with a sign saying “Quakers Mourn Ohio’s Dead in Vietnam” and reading the names. The first time the hour was up and they realized they still had more names to read was very upsetting.

Sounds to me like the women’s march just happened to coincide with one of those Quaker vigils, which were a Downtown staple for years.
