GREEN CREEK TOWNSHIP – A homicide suspect from Willard was severely injured after crashing into a Sandusky County sheriff’s deputy’s parked car after a chase late Sunday, but no lawenforcement officers were injured.

Around 11:10 p.m. Sunday, the Huron County Sheriff ’s Office sent an alert that a homicide suspect driving a silver Chevy Trailblazer was last known to be in the Pickerel Creek Wildlife area, near Vickery in Sandusky County.

The homicide had just occurred in Huron County, according to a news release from the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergeant Jason Kline and K9 officer George Dorsey along with the Ohio Highway Patrol began checking the area.

Kline located the suspect’s vehicle parked at Coon Creek Hunt Club, according to Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton.

When Kline attempted to make contact with the driver, the vehicle began traveling southwest through the county before turning westbound on County Road 229.

Sandusky County Deputy Bill Darling placed spike strips along the roadway on County Road 229 and County Road 214.

As the vehicle approached the spike strips it veered off the road, driving directly into Darling’s cruiser that was parked in the eastbound lane. The impact sent the cruiser into a beanfield and the suspect’s vehicle went airborne before coming to rest in the roadway, according to the news release.

The suspect sustained severe injuries and was taken by medical helicopter from the scene. No other injuries occurred.

“We are just glad Bill Darling was not in his cruiser at the time,” Hilton said.

Hilton said an insurance adjuster will inspect the damage, but he believes the cruiser was a total loss. cshoup@gannett.com 419-334-1035
