Gas station to improve security after shootings
A South Side gas station where a homicide and multiple shootings have occurred so far this year will close for 30 days and implement a host of new security measurements, according to a settlement announced Wednesday by Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein's office.
The Mobil gas station and convenience store, located at 1509 Lockbourne
Road at the intersection of Lockbourne Road and Frebis Avenue, will close between Sept. 20 and Oct. 20, Klein's office said in a statement.
The city had filed an injunction against the gas station this year in Franklin County Environmental Court.
According to court records, more than 280 calls for service had been received by Columbus police at the gas station in the last 12 months. Those calls include nearly 30 shootings.
In one shootout on July 29, between 40 and 50 rounds were fired and 57year-old Richard Lane was killed, the city attorney's office said.
There also have been 24 reports of shots fired, a person with a gun or a Shotspotter alert at the location since the beginning of 2021.
