Fall might be the time to stop and appreciate the fruits of one's garden, but it's also the time to start planning for next year.
Anyone interested in learning how to create a more sustainable landscape will benefit from a weeklong symposium at the Dawes Arboretum, with virtual talks in the evening and a full day of in-person activities on Sept. 25, when the arboretum will also conduct its fall plant sale.
Those with more modest goals can learn about hostas and other shadetolerant plants in a program at the Wagnalls Library, or find out how to put the lawn and garden to bed for the year at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
h The 10th annual Ohio Sustainable Landscapes Symposium at the Dawes Arboretum will run Sept. 2025. From 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20-24, attend virtual classes on making room for native plants in your landscape. Then on Sept. 25, meet at the arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Road, Newark, for classes, hands-on landscape design and walking and wagon tours. be holding its annual fall plant sale on Sept. 25. Members will be admitted to the sale from 10 a.m. to noon, and nonmembers from noon to 3 p.m. Arboretum experts will be on hand to answer questions and give advice. Admission to the sale is included with arboretum admission (free for members, $10, or $5 for children and free for children younger than 5.) Garden to Bed” at an in-person class from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 25 at the
Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, 1777 E. Broad St. The class will cover fall pruning and planting, winter pruning, storing bulbs, saving container plants and seeds, lawn care and tool maintenance. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Volunteers will help clean up sites along the Scioto including Confluence Park, Griggs Reservoir Park, the Scioto Greenlawn Dam Park and the Scioto Mile in a joint program sponsored by the City of Columbus, the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, Green Columbus and more.
