Marine brings mistreatment of flags to light
The Marine veteran, Dano Paulsen, featured in the Sept. 19 article, “Marine veteran removes flags from memorial,” deserves an award for bringing ill use of our American and military flags to the fore in Shelby.
The sight of a tattered American flag is disconcerting, and I get it.
Recently driving on 270 Westerville I noticed a filthy, tattered American flag hanging from a sign to honor Westerville’s two fallen police officers, Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli, tragically murdered attempting to quell a domestic dispute on Feb. 10, 2018. To see their flag disrespected from lack of care made me very sad because that is a dishonor to their memories.
I have had an American flag on my porch, under cover and lit at night, since 9/11.
I support Mr. Paulsen because he wants what we, who have not served, take for granted: respect for our American flag, an important symbol of his work in keeping us free.
The police in Shelby should rethink the maltreatment of our veteran and apologize to this man who tried to do a good and responsible thing for his community.
I think he deserves to be honored for it. Thank you for your service! God bless you, Mr. Paulsen.
