Glow-disc golf, a flick and a ‘headlamp hike’ on tap
It’s easy to be adventurous at the Metro Parks this week.
If you’d like to experience the parks after dark, take a headlamp hike at Scioto Grove, or try some glow-disc golf at Glacier Ridge, where the baskets will be illuminated and glow necklaces will be supplied.
Adventure ’80s-style will be happening at Highbanks Metro Park, where you can watch David Bowie in the part he was born in play in “Labyrinth,” while munching popcorn provided by the park.
More adventurous eating will be going on in the “Can You Eat This?” program at Blacklick Woods and the “Pawpaw Prowl” at Sharon Woods.
h Try your hand at glow-disc golf from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Glacier Ridge, 9801 Hyland Croy Road, Plain City. Take your own discs, and probably a flashlight or headlamp. The baskets will be illuminated and glow necklaces will be provided. A small number of disc lights will be available to borrow.
h Find and taste-test wild edibles, such as pawpaws, walnuts, hickory nuts, acorns (samples will be available afterward) and learn how to prepare them during a one-mile walk from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Blacklick Woods Metro Park, 6975 E. Livingston Ave., Reynoldsburg.
h Wear your best ’80s gear (with a few extra layers if it’s cold out) for an outdoor showing of the 1986 cult classic “Labyrinth” from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Highbanks Big Meadow Picnic Area, 9466 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center. Take a blanket or lawn chair. The park will provide popcorn and pre-movie activities.
h Take a mile-and-a-half long hike to look for Ohio’s native fruit from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 during the “Pawpaw Prowl” at Sharon Woods, 6911 Cleveland Ave., Westerville. Samples of the fruit will be available for tasting after the hike.
h Encounter the woods after dark in a two-mile “Headlamp Hike” from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Sept. 28 at Scioto Grove, 5172 Jackson Pike, Grove City. Meet by the Arrowhead Picnic Shelter, and take along a headlamp or flashlight.
