Lady A didn’t deserve platform paper gave it

-

Responding to the Sept. 26 article, “Kelley discusses band’s name change,” I was once an avid Lady Antebellum fan, many years ago when they first gained some popularity. I was even more of a fan when I learned that they were changing their name to “Lady A” after educating themselves about what the word Antebellum meant and how it could affect people of color.

Where they completely lost me was when they took the original “Lady A” to court over the rights to her name. This is a clear example of how white people are claiming they want to be advocates, but as soon as it inconveniences them, they work against those they claim to want to learn more about.

I felt your article shone a light on a musical group that does not need our spotlight.

The half-page article could have been given to the original Lady A and all of the work she is doing for her community and her long-lasting music career. I hope in the future the newspaper and its writers will choose to use its platform for those who deserve it.
