Marine who criticized pullout released
Officer from Anderson left detention Tuesday
Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, an officer in the Marine Corps with ties to the Cincinnati area who received national attention after criticizing leaders over the pullout from Afghanistan, has been released from detention.
A Marine spokesman confirmed to CBS News that he was released from the brig Tuesday.
“Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. is being released from confinement today, Oct. 5, 2021, as a result of a mutual agreement between Lt. Col. Scheller, his defense counsel, and the Commanding General, Training Command,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The spokesperson declined to provide any additional details.
Scheller, formerly a commander of Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at the School of Infantry East located at Camp Geiger in Jacksonville, Florida, was held in pretrial confinement at Camp Lejeune.
On Aug. 26, Scheller, who went to Anderson High School and the University of Cincinnati, posted a video demanding accountability from senior leaders after an attack killed 13 U.S. service members in Kabul, Afghanistan.
The following day, Scheller was relieved of his command.
What followed was a series of videos and social media posts from Scheller violating a gag order, which landed him in the brig.
