Howard “Bud” L. Downing, age 73, of Plain City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 while surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 7, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Howard R. and Ileen (Denune) Downing. Bud was a graduate of Brookhaven High School and obtained his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University. He obtained his Masters of Divinity at Grace Theological Seminary. He later graduated from Union Institute and University with his Doctorate to practice clinical psychology. Bud was known as a Pastoral Counselor, Life Coach and Spiritual Director at Grace Brethren Church of Columbus and more recently Darby Grace Brethren Church of Plain City. Pastor Bud often contributed thought-provoking half-page inserts to the church Sunday bulletin. His catchphrase was, “Hoping to Help.” In addition, he taught several classes focusing on bringing the student into a deeper spiritual connection with others and the Lord. Bud led a ministry of “Encouragement” in the form of small group studies, as well as in a counseling setting. He was generous with his words. While he was somewhat soft spoken, he was a very credible and trustworthy voice. Bud had a brilliant mind, he was a great brainstorming partner who helped sharpen other minds. He was deep and sincere – while friendly and conversational, Bud was always ready to get beneath the surface and connect on a more spiritual level. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Lou (Cline) Downing. Bud is survived by his devoted children, Nathan (Lovina) Downing, Adam (Nicole) Downing, Angela (Justin) Baldwin; grandchildren, Alex (Kiara), Jesse, Jace, Jenna, Daniel, Merida; sister, Kathy (Danny) Boston; many nieces, nephews and friends in ministry. Graveside services will be held 9:30AM Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Forest Grove Cemetery, 8270 Cemetery Pike, Plain City, Ohio 43064. A Celebration of Life Party will begin at 11AM Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Darby Grace Brethren Church, 11672 Lafayette-plain City Rd, Plain City, Ohio 43064.
