Bengals’ Joe Burrow on ‘voice rest’ following Sunday injury to throat
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow typically addresses the media on Wednesdays but after suffering a possible throat contusion Sunday night, Burrow was unable to talk to reporters because he has been advised to talk as little as possible at the moment.
Head coach Zac Taylor said his quarterback is on “voice rest.”
Burrow isn’t limited in practice due to his throat conditions, and according to wide receiver Tee Higgins, he sounded and acted normal when he was in the huddle during the walk-through period.
“It kind of works out because we’re going on the road and the dome will be loud,” Taylor said of Burrow. “One of the ways to manufacture what it’s going to be like in the huddle is to whisper in the huddle. He’s on voice rest a little bit, and we still get something accomplished with what we’re going to face in Detroit.”
After the 25-22 loss to the Packers, Burrow was taken to a local hospital. It’s unclear on what play Burrow injured his throat, but he did take two massive hits in the loss.
For that reason, much has been made about Burrow’s quarterbacking style.
Burrow likes to scramble out of the pocket and make plays with his legs, but after missing a large part of his rookie season after tearing his ACL and MCL, his coach asked him to be smart when assessing a situation that requires him to decide if he should keep running or end the play.
“One of our team rules is protect the team,” Taylor said. “Joe protects the team by protecting himself . ... I think he has done a really good job of that. He always takes each new situation as its own and learned from it and try to improve it for the next time.”
Burrow has completed 104 passes for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season. He’s been sacked 14 times and has completed 51.6 percent of his passes when pressured.
