Guide to Christmas classics and new releases

For many people, moviegoing and the holiday season go together like turkey and stuffing. It’s the time of year when the studios release some of their proudest achievements and most likely blockbuster candidates. h This holiday season is no exception. Big releases on tap include Steven Spielberg’s new version of “West Side Story,” new entrants in the “Spider-man” and “Matrix” franchises and a Shakespeare adaptation starring Denzel Washington and directed by “Fargo” filmmaker Joel Coen. h It’s also a time when many film fans revisit their favorite flicks, particularly those with holiday themes. Numerous theaters throughout Greater Columbus will screen beloved Christmas movies of days gone by. 200 HUTCHINSON AVE. Admission: $5 h “A Christmas Story” (1983): Those who became familiar with the classic comedy thanks to repeated airings on TNT may relish revisiting the film on the big screen. Directed by Bob Clark, the film stars Peter Billingsey as Red Ryder BB gun-obsessed youngster Ralphie; Darren Mcgavin and Melinda Dillon as his frazzled but loving parents; and is narrated by author Jean Shepherd, who wrote the script.

Showtimes: 3:25 and 9 p.m. Dec. 3-5 and Dec. 7 h “Elf” (2003): Close to 20 years have elapsed since the premiere of the comedy starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, but that’s time enough to enshrine it as a holiday classic. Jon Favreau directed the film, which co-stars James Caan and Zooey Deschanel.

Showtimes: 1:40 and 4:10 p.m. Dec. 3-5 and Dec. 7 h “White Christmas” (1954): Singer and actress Rosemary Clooney — sister of Nick Clooney, a longtime Cincinnati television anchor and aunt of actor George Clooney — sings “Sisters,” “Snow,” “Count Your Blessings” and the title song in the holiday-themed musical, co-starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Vera-ellen.
