Ohio State DT Garrett earns first-team All-big Ten honors

Tackle Haskell Garrett was Ohio State's only defensive player to earn All-big Ten first-team selection in voting announced Tuesday.

Garrett was named to the first team by both coaches and media. Offensive players will be announced on Wednesday.

In the coaches' voting, defensive end Tyreke Smith and bullet Ronnie Hickman were second-team. Defensive end Zach Harrison and cornerback Denzel Burke were third-team.

In the media voting, Harrison was second-team, and Smith and Hickman third-team.

Kicker Noah Ruggles was named second-team by both coaches and media.

Garrett was credited with 22 tackles despite battling an injury for part of the season. The senior had seven tackles for loss, including 51⁄2 sacks. Three of the sacks came against Akron. He also recovered two fumbles.

Hickman, a sophomore, was the Buckeyes' leading tackler. He had 97 stops, including 53 solo tackles. Linebacker Cody Simon was next with 54 tackles.

Smith had 25 tackles, including five tackles for loss. That included three sacks. The senior missed three games because of an injury but played well after his return.

Harrison, a junior, had 29 tackles. He had seven tackles for loss, including four sacks.

Burke led Ohio State with 11 pass breakups. He also had an intercepti­on returned 23 yards for a touchdown.

Ruggles made 18 of 19 field-goal attempts and made all 68 extra-point kicks.

Cornerback­s Sevyn Banks and Cam Brown, defensive linemen Antwuan Jackson, Taron Vincent and Tyleik Williams, linebacker­s Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg, safety Bryson Shaw, and kick returner Emeka Egbuka received honorable mention.
