Sheriff: Man dead after driving into retention pond
A Mount Perry man is dead after his vehicle drove into a retention pond in the Etna area on Thursday evening.
Around 8:28 p.m. Thursday, the Licking County Sheriff 's Office was called to the Amazon Fulfillment Center on National Road in Etna Township for a vehicle that had driven into a retention pond. Upon arrival, two deputies saw the vehicle completely submerged in the pond.
Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said both deputies entered the water, attempting to rescue the occupant, but couldn't reach the vehicle due to freezing water temperature and depth of the pond.
A man was rescued from the vehicle once West Licking Fire District arrived on scene, and life saving measures were att. The man, 52-year-old Michael P. Millay, of Mount Perry, was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation.
