Sheriff: Man dead after driving into retention pond

A Mount Perry man is dead after his vehicle drove into a retention pond in the Etna area on Thursday evening.

Around 8:28 p.m. Thursday, the Licking County Sheriff 's Office was called to the Amazon Fulfillment Center on National Road in Etna Township for a vehicle that had driven into a retention pond. Upon arrival, two deputies saw the vehicle completely submerged in the pond.

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said both deputies entered the water, attempting to rescue the occupant, but couldn't reach the vehicle due to freezing water temperatur­e and depth of the pond.

A man was rescued from the vehicle once West Licking Fire District arrived on scene, and life saving measures were att. The man, 52-year-old Michael P. Millay, of Mount Perry, was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigat­ion.
