St. Edward, Chardon win state titles
CANTON — Here are recaps of Friday’s state football championship games:
Division I: Lakewood St. Edward 23, Springfield 13
Danny Enovitch ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns for St. Edward, which won its fifth state title, all since 2010.
Despite being stuffed on four straight plays from the Springfield 1 on their its drive, St. Edward (15-1) led 16-0 at half. Springfield (14-2) was making its first title game appearance.
Division III: Chardon 21, Hamilton Badin 14
For the second year in a row, the Chardon needed a late score to claim the championship.
Sean Carr’s 2-yard touchdown run with 1:05 remaining in regulation lifted the Hilltoppers (16-0) to their second consecutive state title. Last year, Chardon needed double overtime to beat Desales for the title.
Badin (14-1), making its first titlegame appearance since 1990, gained only 143 yards. The Rams actually ran two more plays than Chardon but were outgained by 90 yards and, most importantly, outscored by seven. The Rams had six three-and-outs, including their next-to-last possession to set up Chardon’s winning score.
