Restaurant servers deserve minimum wage pay, not just tips
I’m not surprised that restaurants are having difficulties hiring and keeping staff.
Imagine you have a steady job, but you have no idea what your compensation will be from hour to hour.
Although you have a guaranteed minimum wage, the amount is significantly less than workers in other industries. Instead you are dependent upon the random generosity, or lack thereof, of your customers, known as tipping.
No wonder you are looking for another form of employment.
It is time to do away with a system of compensation based on gratuities and provide servers with the same guaranteed minimum hourly wage other workers receive. I suspect restaurant patrons will not mind higher menu prices if tipping goes away.
