Marysville’s Powers named Gatorade Ohio football player of the year

Gabe Powers’ list of accolades is now even longer.

After being named the Division I defensive player of the year and firstteam All-ohio in 2020, the Marysville linebacker is the 2021 Gatorade Ohio player of the year. He is the first Gatorade football player of the year from Marysville.

Powers made 90 tackles, including 17 for loss, and six sacks this season as he led the Monarchs to the Division I, Region 2 championsh­ip game. He also forced four fumbles.

In addition to his main role at linebacker, Powers rushed for 877 yards and 14 touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and returned two punts for touchdowns. He was also Marysville’s starting punter. At 6 feet 4 and 235 pounds, the four-star Ohio State commit wreaked havoc on opposing offenses and was the leader of a defense that allowed just 8.6 points per game, including two shutouts.

Powers maintains a 3.58 weighted GPA and is an active volunteer in the Marysville community.
