Mark J. Barrett, age 72, passed away on December 8, 2021 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Mark graduated from Bishop Watterson in 1967 then became a MP in the Army and was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism. He furthered his education and was a graduate of Park College class of 1976 and Capital University class of 1982. He originally started March 30, 1970 as a Deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s office – he was promoted

to a Sergeant October 7, 1979 – was promoted to

Inspector 1 on March 1, 1982. This was all under

Sheriff Berkemer and at the end Sheriff Berry. He left January 4, 1985 when

Sheriff Smith was first

elected. He returned under Sheriff Smith as a Training

Officer 2 on August 18,

1986. Moved to Inst. Dept. Supr 1 on November 2, 1986 and then was made Chief of Correction­s April 8, 1990. He retired January 31, 2014 as Chief Deputy. Preceded in death by father Emory Ward Barrett, mother Mary Jane Barrett. Survived by children, Heather Barrett (Bryan Bachelder), Jeffrey (Barb) Barrett and Robert (Sherri) Barrett; grandchild­ren, Nichole, William, Austin, Tess, Hannah,

Victoria and Brandon; great grandchild­ren, Madison, Geneva, Clinton and Wyatt; sisters, Susan (Doug) Fries, and Mary Eve (Richard) Corrigan. Family wants to give a special thank you to the ICU doctors and nurses at Riverside Methodist Hospital, level 5. Thank you

the best they could be. Friends may call Tuesday, December 14 from 4-7pm at JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME, 2693 West Broad, where service will be held at 10:30am Wednesday.
