Coffman’s Steiner breaks track record

- Adam Conn Columbus Dispatch USA TODAY NETWORK

Kentucky senior Abby Steiner, a Dublin Coffman graduate, was named the Division I women's national Athlete of the Week by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Steiner ran the 300 meters in 35.80 seconds at the Louisville Cardinal Classic, breaking the collegiate record of 35.83 set by Nebraska's Marlene Ottey in 1981.

Steiner also shares the 200-meter collegiate record (22.38), which she tied in March at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

At Coffman, Steiner was a four-time All American at the New Balance Nationals, a state record holder in the 60, 100 and 200 meters and a 16-time state champion.

Mount Union football falls in semifinals

Mount Union's bid for a 22nd Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl appearance and 14th Division III National Championship since 1993 fell short Saturday in a 26-13 semifinal loss to visiting North Central.

It is the second time in three years

North Central, the 2020 defending champions, bested the Purple Raiders (59-52 in 2019).

The Cardinals gained 293 yards on 51 carries, the most yards allowed by Mount Union since a 2017 playoff game versus Washington & Lee.

Jaden Manley (Hartley) led the Purple Raiders with 65 yards on four receptions and caught two touchdown passes.

Area alums thriving at Ohio Dominican

In spite of a 1-8 start to the basketball season, Ohio Dominican's Olivia Fox and Gabby Stare, both Newark graduates, continue to earn personal achievements.

In a 78-67 loss to West Liberty, Stare scored a career-high 21 points less than a week after setting her previous best of 18 points in a loss to Hillsdale. Fox, who has 32 rebounds over her past four games, including 12 at Hillsdale, is three shy of 500 for her career.

At Newark, Stare, the 2020-21 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was named first-team All-district as well as All-ohio second team and District 11 Player of the Year her senior season. Fox was named first-team ALL-OCC and All-central District while averaging 10.3 points per game.

Bailey Williams (Dublin Jerome) is second on the team with 12.7 points per game and first with 7.67 rebounds per game.

Rankin sets career highs

Chase Rankin (Gahanna) scored 20 points and had 13 assists, both career highs, as Lincoln Memorial downed Mars Hill 101-70 in a Division II South Atlantic Conference game Saturday.

Rankin leads the Railsplitters with 7.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 34.1 minutes per game while averaging 12 points and 6.4 rebounds.

Rankin averaged 15.4 points, 6.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game with Gahanna, earned ALL-OCC second team honors and was named Jared Sullinger Scholastic Play-by-play MVP his senior season. aconn@dispatch.com #ajconn95
