- Eric Lagatta

An unidentified, 21-year-old male pedestrian died Monday morning after he reportedly darted in front of an oncoming tractor-trailer on westbound Interstate 70 near Hamilton Road, Columbus police said.

The crash, which was reported at 3:04 a.m., led police to shut down a portion of the interstate west of Hamilton Road on the city's East Side for four hours while officers investigated the scene, according to the police crash report.

The pedestrian was taken by Madison Township medics to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m., police reported.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 24year-old man from Vestal, New York, told police that he was traveling westbound on the interstate and had seen the pedestrian walking on the right shoulder. As the tractor-trailer was about to pass the man, the driver told police, the man suddenly entered the westbound lanes and into the truck's path, the crash report states.

The man was in an area with no pedestrian access, and no disabled vehicles were nearby, according to a police news release.

The man's name has not been released pending notification of family.
