Newark’s Shumate has a big week for Toledo

The Toledo Rockets head into Midamerica­n Conference play with an 8-3 record after a 96-63 victory over Marshall on Tuesday.

JT Shumate (Newark), who transferre­d after two seasons at Division II Walsh, had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

That helped Shumate rank 19th nationally last week in Kenpom's offensive rating, which measures an individual player's efficiency. Shumate finished ahead of every projected lottery pick for the 2022 NBA draft.

The junior is averaging 14.5 points per game and leads the Rockets in rebounds (7.5 per game), shooting percentage (55.9), three-point shooting (48.9) and blocked shots (9).

At Newark, Shumate earned secondteam, Division I all-state honors, averaging 21.2 points as a senior after shooting a school-record 49% from 3-point range his junior season.

Wimer perfect at tournament

Findlay's James Wimer (Central

Crossing) went 6-0 to win the 157-pound wrestling title in the Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapol­is. The defending 157-pound Division II champion entered the season as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class and earned most outstandin­g wrestler honors at the meet.

The Oilers placed eighth in the tournament, led by Wimer and Brandon Proudlock, who won the 141-pound title.

Wimer (17-3) was also named Great Midwest Athletic Conference athlete of the week after defeating Jonah Smith 13-3 to give the Oilers a 16-3 lead on the way to a 19-18 victory over West Liberty.

At Central Crossing, Wimer placed fifth in the 2015 and 2016 state tournament­s in the 132- and 138-pound weight classes respective­ly.

Dulin caps career at Valdosta State

Arrington Dulin (Reynoldsbu­rg) closed out his college football career as a defensive standout for Valdosta State, which lost in the NCAA Division II championsh­ip to Ferris State, 58-17.

Dulin, who had two tackles and a quarterbac­k hurry in the final, tied for the team lead in sacks (5.5), quarterbac­k hurries (11) and was second on the team with nine tackles for loss this season. Two of his sacks came in a semifinal victory over Colorado School of Mines.

In high school, he was awarded Allohio Capital Conference first-team honors and received all-district honorable mention with the Raiders. His brother, Ashton Dulin, plays wide receiver for the Indianapol­is Colts.

OSU men's hockey heads into break on a win streak

With a two-game sweep of Bowling Green — a 4-3 overtime victory followed by a 3-2 win — the Buckeyes head into their winter break having won three straight. OSU owns a 12-6 record and is 6-4 in league play, good for 18 points and third place in the Big Ten. Ohio State is five points behind division leader Michigan and one point behind Minnesota. It has a two-game series versus Long Island University on Dec. 31 before conference play resumes on Jan. 7 at Wisconsin.

Central Ohio Bowl Watch

Jaylin Bannerman (Utah State/ Pickeringt­on Central) - Made two solo tackles in a 24-13 win over Oregon State at the LA Bowl.

Robert Lefevre (Marshall/hilliard Davidson) - Averaged 40.9 yards on eight punts with a long of 50 and landed two inside the 20-yard line in a 36-21 loss to Louisiana at the New Orleans Bowl. aconn@dispatch.com #ajconn95
