Clifton Mill holiday display ranks as one of top in nation

- Allison Ward

For the third consecutive year, the Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill was named one of the top-3 public lights holiday displays in the nation.

The fantastical winter wonderland, which features more than four million lights and a 100-foot "waterfall" of twinkling bulbs, grabbed third place on the USA TODAY list of the 10 best holiday displays.

The Christmas attraction at Clifton Mill, in Clifton, Ohio, near Yellow Springs ranked No. 2 in 2020 and No. 3 in 2019. It's the only entry from Ohio to make the list this year.

For 33 years, the Greene County historic mill — one of the largest waterpowered grist mills still in existence — has put on the holiday lights event, which now boasts a miniature village, Santa Claus museum, toy collection and a synchronized lights and music show that features the old covered bridge.

The Legendary Lights opened just after Thanksgiving and continues through Dec. 30. The twinkling show runs from 6 to 9 p.m. nightly (6 to 8

p.m. Dec. 24-25) and costs $10. (It's free for children age 3 and younger.)

A panel of experts and editors picked the initial nominees for the USA TODAY list and then, a popular vote chose the top 10.

Two Florida light displays, including one with a 35-foot Christmas tree made from sand, snagged the first and second spots on the list.
