Van Skoy, John
1942 - 2021
John James Van Skoy “Jim”, 79, passed away quietly on December 17, 2021. John was born on October 11, 1942 to John R. and Katherine Van Skoy in Columbus, Ohio who preceded him death. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn S. Van Skoy (Sue); brother, Joseph R. Van Skoy; and sisters, Mary Kay Bernans, Kathleen (Greg) Metzger, all of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from Holy Rosary high school in 1960. He entered the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation. He served on the USS Bache and the USS Dahlgren where he was a sonar technician. He loved his time in the navy and would frequently talk about some of the experiences he had while there. After his service in the navy Jim worked at Western Electric in the Final Test
Department for several years, then moved to Solidstate Controls where he worked for the next 40 years. He was manager of the Field Service and Final Test department. He was ultimately responsible for hiring many of the key employees of this company. During his employment at SCI he developed many life long friendships that he enjoyed till his death. Jim was a person with many and varied interests. He loved the outdoors, took advantage of it’s splendor every chance he had. Fishing was one of his interests. He was certain to avail himself to any chance to wet a hook. He was a minor “car nut” working on all types of cars, even crewing on a SCCA crew for a number of racing seasons. He also was very fond of motorcycles and boats. He ultimate interest was aviation. He loved to fly. He would spend weekends flying, then working on his plane. He always said, “he did not need to go any place in particular he just needed to get off the ground.” He was extremely disapointed when his health required that he stop
flying. He never stopped
reading and learning about aviation. Travel took up many days of his life. He visited many different countries and towns with Sue and friends. Over the years he visited 20 some different countries. He did profess to have a favorite country that he visited. He thoroughly enjoyed his Australia experience. Friends may call Tuesday 5-8pm at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E.
