Over the last decade or so, craft brewers have made a resurgence in Columbus and around the country.

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association lists 55 breweries in Greater Columbus, including Scottish import Brew Dog — an international heavyweight that has opened brewpubs in New Albany, Franklinton and the Short North and a flagship hotel/brewery combo in Canal Winchester.

Even Hoster, which couldn’t survive Prohibition, is planning a comeback. The company says on its website that it owns the brand and recipe and is raising money to bring back Columbus’ original premium beer. Gold Top is currently being produced in limited quantity, with future plans to produce other German-inspired lagers under the Hoster label, as well.

As for the Wagner Breweries, the property was sold to the Dispatch Printing Co., the former owner of The Dispatch, and was razed for an office building.

Gambrinus, the company’s most-popular brand, was named after King Gambrinus, the legendary king of Flanders and patron of brewers. A statue of King Gambrinus graced the front of the brewery and continues to stand in the Brewery District.
