Schladen, Yvonne
Yvonne Antonia Bluteau Schladen, 84, died on Dec. 22, 2021, at St. Paul Hermitage, Beech Grove, Ind., surrounded by her loving family and a staff that cared for her during a long bout with Alzheimer’s disease. Yvonne was born on Nov. 4, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, at St. Ann’s Maternity Hospital. Her parents, Victor Bluteau and Marie Helen Lavalley Bluteau, never strayed far from their French Canadian roots, traveling regularly to
Quebec with their children to see family. Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents and a younger brother Gerald, an engineer who passed in 2018. On July 4, 1959, Yvonne married Richard Schladen, who survives her. They have four children, Vince (Nancy) Schladen, Marty Schladen, Mary (Greg) Schladen Ullrich and Katy (Bob) Schladen Stahl. They also have five grandchildren, Allie Thomas, Ben and Dan Ullrich, and Max and Colleen Stahl. A top student at St. Augustine, Class of ‘51, and Our Lady of Victory, Class of ‘55, and at Ohio State University, Yvonne taught English, reading, special education and social studies. She earned a master’s degree from Miami University in 1976. She taught at Greenhills Middle School and Bethany School in suburban Cincinnati and at Lawrenceburg High School in Indiana. Yvonne was a passionate reader, writer and lifelong learner, and she nurtured a love of literature, history and travel in her children, her students and anyone else fortunate enough to spend time with her. Never one to seek attention, Yvonne took a genuine interest in others and was always quick to laugh, especially at silly, lowbrow jokes. She is already sorely missed. A memorial and reception will be held from 5-9pm on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Marriott North in Indianapolis. All are invited and a special room rate can be gotten by contacting the hotel. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a program meant to motivate disadvantaged Columbus children to learn through literature. Contributions can be sent to Community Development for All People, Attn: Freedom School, 946 Parsons Ave., Columbus, OH, 43206.
