Ohio U’s Boals earns 100th career victory

Ohio University has opened up Midamerica­n Conference play with a pair of wins, including a 69-63 win at Akron, which marked the 100th career victory for coach Jeff Boals.

Jason Carter (Johnstown)dunked with 11 seconds remaining in Tuesday's game and added a blocked shot three seconds later to help improve the Bobcats' overall record to 11-2. Carter finished with 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Ben Roderick (Olentangy Liberty) and Sam Towns (Pickeringt­on Central) added five and two points, respective­ly. Mark Sears led the Bobcats with 24 points.

Against Western Michigan, Carter had 17 points and eight rebounds on the way to a 59-47 win.

Boals, who served as an assistant on Thad Matta's staff at Ohio State between 2009-2016, went 55-42 in three seasons at Stony Brook with a pair of CBI Tournament appearance­s. He is 4525 at OU and won the MAC Tournament last season, earned a 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament and then upset fourth-seeded Virginia before losing to Creighton in the second round.

Penha ascending in the GMAC

CJ Penha (Harvest Prep), a forward for Trevecca Nazarene, was named the Great Midwestern Athletic Conference athlete of the week after posting 29 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Cedarville and 25 points with nine rebounds

in a loss to Kentucky Wesleyan.

Penha combined to shoot 21 of 32 from the field in those games and began this week with a 17-point effort in a loss at Ohio Dominican. He currently leads the conference with 10.3 rebounds per game and is second with 19.8 points per game.

As a senior at Harvest Prep, Penha was a finalist for Ohio Mr. Basketball, named a District 10 All-star and the District 10 Most Valuable Player as well as first-team, All-central District. The Warriors finished 29-1 and made a statesemif­inal appearance in 2017.

Ohio State hockey postponed

The Buckeyes' two-game series at Wisconsin scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been postponed due to COVID-19 within Wisconsin's program.

The status of the series will be announced later this week. OSU'S next games are set for Jan. 14-15 against Notre Dame at Value City Arena.

Central Ohio Bowl Watch

Thomas Rush (Minnesota/marysville) - Made two tackles in an 18-8 win over West Virginia in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Camby Goff (Air Force/reynoldsbu­rg) - Had six tackles, including three solo and one tackle for a loss in a 31-28 win over Louisville at the First Responder Bowl.

Kieren Douglas (Purdue/pickeringt­on Central) - Totaled 14 tackles with one pass defended in a 48-45 overtime win over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

Xavier Henderson (Michigan State/

Pickeringt­on Central) - Made two tackles in a 31-21 win over Pitt in the Peach Bowl.

Jacob Slade (Michigan State/olentangy) - Had six tackles and 1.5 sacks in the win over Pitt.

Isaiah Mullens (Wisconsin/harvest Prep) - Had one solo tackle in a 20-13 win over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Brandon Chapman (Wake Forest/ Grove City) - Caught two passes, both for touchdowns, totaling five yards in a 38-10 win over Rutgers in the Gator Bowl.

Ty Van Fossen (Cincinnati/desales) - Made eight tackles — two solo — in a 27-6 loss to Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.

Brad Robbins (Michigan/westervill­e South) - Averaged 44.5 yards on two punts with a long of 47 in a 34-11 loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Zach Harrison (Ohio State/olentangy Orange) - Totaled five tackles in a 4845 win over Utah in the Rose Bowl.

Jack Sawyer (Ohio State/pickeringt­on North) - Made one tackle in the win over Utah.

Luke Lachey (Iowa/grandview) Had two receptions for 27 yards in a 2017 loss to Kentucky at the Citrus Bowl.

Chris Stoll (Penn State/desales) Made one tackle in a 24-10 loss to Arkansas in the Outback Bowl.

Lorenzo Styles Jr. (Notre Dame/ Pickeringt­on Central) - Led the Irish with 136 yards on eight receptions and scored a touchdown in a 37-35 loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl. aconn@dispatch.com #ajconn95
