School bus strikes home after crash

- Bethany Bruner

Columbus police say there were no serious injuries after a Columbus City Schools bus collided with a car then struck a home Thursday morning.

The crash was reported around 6:10 a.m. near the intersection of South Highland Avenue and Palmetto Street in the Hilltop neighborhood.

Police said the bus, which had eight students on board at the time, collided with a car and then struck a home. None of the students were injured in the crash, police said.

Columbus City Schools said the students and the bus driver, Dawn Cole, were all examined by emergency medical personnel who responded to the scene. Five students were released to their parents and the other three students were taken to Columbus Downtown High School by another bus.

The district said the driver of the other vehicle involved was cited for running a stop sign at a high rate of speed. That information has not been confirmed by police.

The driver of the car was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
