East side bar Leipzig Haus to close doors this week

- Taijuan Moorman

Neighborhood bar Leipzig Haus has announced it will close its doors this week.

In a social media post by a co-owner of the Berwick dive bar, Covid-related issues were noted to have an effect on the business, but uncertainty surrounding the future development of a possible Sheetz gas station and convenience store has caused even more concern.

“As much as COVID has disrupted our business, the unknown of the potential Sheetz development is more than we can overcome,” read the post.

“With our landlord unwilling to communicate, discuss, or otherwise inform us of what lies ahead we are only guaranteed a sixty-day future.”

“As a business, we cannot continue to operate, invest or plan for the future. Nor can we hire employees with good conscious [sic] knowing they may not have a job the next month,” the post continued.

The Sheetz location in question has been proposed for 2253 E. Livingston Ave. – and may include the redevelopment of a nearby strip mall – as part of a $250 million investment across the region that the company announced in 2020.

At 2201 E. Livingston Ave., Leipzig Haus was a favorite gathering place for students and alumni of nearby Capital University and nearby Berwick and Bexley residents.

The bar's last day is Feb. 5. tmoorman@dispatch.com @Taijuannichole
