Penzone’s opens Gahanna/new Albany spa
Salon has art, bar and noshes by Cameron Mitchell
Imagine stepping away for a refreshing glass of champagne, dual mani/pedis, meditation and a facial that will ensure you don't look a day over (insert age here). Those are just a few features guests can enjoy at Charles Penzone Inc.'s New Albany/gahanna Salon and Spa that opened Tuesday.
The New Albany/gahanna salon at 5751 N. Hamilton Road replaces the former, 26-year-old location on Cherry Way Drive. The 9,000-square-foot salon is the third new-build project for Penzone in the past four years.
“We have such a strong team and brand and customers and community around us that have helped us get through all of this the past four years,” said Debbie Penzone, president and CEO at Penzone. “I am just so inspired and empowered by our team and artists, that I'm sitting here and we're doing it again – It's just beyond words.”
The original Penzone salon was founded by Charles Penzone in 1969 and has grown from a three-person crew to hundreds of employees and six salons that serve over 25,000 guests monthly.
In 2018, Penzone announced efforts to rebrand for an elevated, modern experience – the New Albany/gahanna
Salon and Spa was announced last year and was designed to reflect the new Penzone experience. It is joined by the Dublin and Short

There are 20 hair stations at the salon in addition to a mix of spa rooms, pedicure and nail stations and makeup and beauty stations. There are currently around 90 team members but the salon will likely reach around 100, Debbie says. The salon is now booking appointments.
At the entrance, guests are greeted with a gallery full of art by Charles himself and other local artists. Farther inside is a social room equipped with a cafe and bar, which offers menus from Crimson Cup Coffee Roasters and ROOT 23 cocktails. Penzone is also partnered with Cameron Mitchell Premiere Events to offer a menu featuring Cameron Mitchell's popular, seasonal items.
Also in the social room are chairs and couches seated around a wood-wrapped fireplace designed for bridal parties, bigger groups or those looking to chat. For those looking for privacy, Penzone offers a Zen Zone, equipped with sound-proof features for relaxation and meditation. In the Lather Lounge, guests can enjoy an aromatherapy-enhanced hair wash.
And as it gets warmer, guests can also hang out on one of two patios with a good book and a cocktail in between services.
Exclusive to the New Albany/gahanna location is the new Jetpeel service, a medi-spa level service advertised as pain-free with immediate results that combines the benefits of dermabrasion, chemical peels, microneedling and botox. Debbie says Penzone is the first in the Midwest to offer the service.
“We committed to taking our skin to the next level, and it was a big commitment,” Debbie says. “The Jetpeel machines are not a drop in the bucket, but we really felt like we needed to make this commitment for our skin artists and for our spa.”
Penzone's next project includes renovating the 18,000-square-foot Dublin Grand Salon, established in 1991 at 6671 Village Parkway. Currently, it houses the team's innovation offices on the top floor and space used for Charles' artwork below – about 10,000 square feet of the space will be repurposed. Over time, it will hopefully begin to feel like a campus, Debbie says.
“There's going to be lots of opportunities and growth, now we have the [New Albany/gahanna] salon done and, you know, where do we go next?” she says. “There's lots and lots of opportunities, I feel.”
