Pools prepare to open for holiday weekend

- Thomas Hanks

As the days get longer and hotter, many are ready to flock once again to area pools.

And Memorial Day weekend is the time to do it.

In Columbus, that means three of the city’s eight outdoor swimming pools will be opening Saturday for the unofficial start of summer: Dodge (545 Sullivant Ave.), Driving Park (1100 Rhoads Ave.), and Tuttle (240 W. Oakland Ave.).

The schedule for the city’s other pools — Glenwood, Lincoln, Marion Franklin, Maryland and Windsor — has not yet been determined, officials said.

For the three pools opening this weekend, the hours will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, according to the Columbus Recreation and Parks website.

Registration is not required, but pools will have capacity limits, according to the city website. Admission will be $1, although there will be no cost for leisure cards.

“Leisure cards are still required, but they’re free now,” said George Shaw, aquatics assistant manager for the city. “Registration will be handled through Activenet, which is how we register for all of our programs — and you can register ahead if you’d like, or you can just come to the site, and we’ll take care of it when you show up.”
