Defending champion: Patrick Cantlay Last year: Cantlay defeated Collin Morikawa on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win his second Memorial (the first coming in 2019), but it goes down as one of the the oddest "what-if?" outcomes in PGA Tour history. On Saturday, Jon Rahm shot a superb 7-under-par 64 to take a six-shot cushion into what he thought would be his Sunday victory lap round, but within moments of finishing his third round Tour officials approached the Spaniard off the back of the 18th green with news he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would need to withdraw. With Rahm out, Cantlay and Morikawa became the 54-hole leaders, and the two Californians joined Scottie Scheffler in trading the lead on Sunday. Cantlay and Morikawa eventually pulled away from the field with late birdies. In the playoff — on the 18th hole — Cantlay buried a 12-foot putt for par while Morikawa's par bid from 6 feet slid by on the left side.
